Early Life

On September 30, 1964, Trey Anastasio was born in Fort Worth, Texas. His successful parents raised him and his sister. His father served as an executive vice president at the Educational Testing Service, while his mother was a well-known novelist and editor of Sesame Street Magazine. Anastasio attended public schools during his early years before graduating from a private institution. While attending a private school, Trey met Steven Pollak, and with his help, wrote several songs that Phish later published.

After completing his schooling, Anastasio enrolled at the University of Vermont to study philosophy. Trey got to know a lot of the future members of Phish while he was an undergraduate, including Mike Gordon, Jeff Holdsworth, and Jon Fishman. In 1983, these friends first got together to play in the university cafeteria. Yet, the crowd could have shown more enthusiasm for the music. Marc Daubert, Page McConnell, and Tom Marshall were among the old friends he ran into when Trey paid a visit to his native New Jersey. These individuals would ultimately join Pish. Trey also worked together with Ernie Stires, who assisted him in honing his musical skills. Anastasio graduated from the university in 1988, although by that time he had changed to Goddard College.
