His father, John, is a math teacher, and his mother, Yolanda, is a housewife. Lee was an athlete as a child and attended Sir Edmund Hillary Primary School, Valley Comprehensive School. He was interested in many sports, such as rugby, football, and cricket. Lee was introduced to golf by his grandparents when he was 13. He played for Boys Home Internationals in 1989, even though he began later than many other golfers. Lee was a natural talent and won his first amateur event, the Peter McEvoy Trophy.
