In Marion, Indiana, on July 28, 1945, James Davis was born. On a livestock farm in Fairmount, Indiana, he grew up alongside his mother Anna, and father James. At Fairmount High School, Davis served as the newspaper’s art editor, “The Breeze.” “The Breeze” published Jim’s first cartoon, and throughout his senior year, he produced a large number of images for the yearbook. He joined the Theta Xi fraternity and enrolled at Ball State University to study art and business after graduating from high school.


Before creating “Garfield,” Davis started his profession by working at an advertising firm. From 1973 through 1975, he produced “Gnorm Gnat” the comic strip, which appeared in The Pendleton Times. From 1976 to 1978, he ran the comical strip “Jon,” which subsequently changed its name to “Garfield,” in The Pendleton Times.
