George Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, on January 10, 1949. Six siblings raised him in Houston. J.D. Foreman was his father, but Leroy Moorehead was his biological father. In his autobiography, George explains that he was troubled as a youngster. At fifteen, he dropped out of school and became a criminal. He wanted to change his life, so he convinced his mother to enroll him in Job Corps. He was determined to get his GED through Job Corps. He trained to be a bricklayer and carpenter. After moving to Pleasanton, California, he began training for boxing.
Career
Foreman’s boxing career began with a boom when he won a gold award at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games for the boxing/heavyweight category. Jonas Cepulis was a veteran of 12 years who defeated Foreman. He is 10 years older than Foreman. After his win, Foreman carried a US flag around the ring and bowed to the troop. Foreman said winning the gold medal was the proudest thing about his career.
In 1969, Foreman became a professional fighter and won 13 fights and 11 knockouts. Foreman won 12 of his fights in 1970. After a year, he earned seven more knockout bouts. His winning streak continued until 1974, when he confronted more formidable opponents like Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton. The match was called “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Ali conquered Foreman, becoming the opening boxer to knock him out. After a shocking defeat to Jimmy Young, Foreman could not win another victory and retired from boxing in 1977.
