Early Life

Donald “Don” King was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 20, 1931. He dropped out of Kent State University and ran an illegal bookmaking business out of the basement at a Kinsman Road record store. In 13 years, he was accused of killing two men. King was convicted in 1967 of second-degree murder. He had previously been convicted of stabbing to death Sam Garrett, an employee who owed him $600.

Career

Muhammad Ali inspired King to fight in a charity boxing exhibition in Cleveland, which was done with the assistance of Lloyd Price, a singer. Don Elbaum, a local promoter, formed a partnership with King early on. Elbaum already had a stable in Cleveland fighters and many years of boxing experience. King arranged a heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali (now known as “The Rumble in the Jungle”) in Zaire in 1974. It was highly anticipated that Ali would face Foreman in the upcoming fight. King had many rivals who wanted to promote the bout. King managed to get a record $10 million purse through an agreement with Zaire.

King’s position as one of the most prominent boxing promoters was solidified the following year when he promoted the third fight between Ali & Joe Frazier in Manila. Manila is the capital of the Philippines, and King called it the “Thrilla In Manila.” King expanded his boxing empire and promoted the top heavyweight fights in the 1970s. King amassed a formidable roster of fighters over the decade. Many of them would go on to become Hall of Famers. In the 1970s, Don King Productions promoted the fights of many soldiers, including Wilfred Benitez and Wilfredo Duran. King organized Ali’s 1975 bout against Chuck Wepner. The fight is believed to have inspired Sylvester Stallone, who wrote the screenplay for “Rocky.”

King remained one of the most prominent promoters in boxing for the next 20 years. Evander Holyfield, Aaron Pryor, Bernard Hopkins, Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ricardo Lopez, and Felix Trinidad were among the boxers who selected King as their promoter for many significant fights.

King was also the concert promoter of The Jacksons’ 1984 Victory Tour. King bought the Cleveland-based weekly newspaper, the call, and Post, in 1998. He was its publisher until 2011.
