Career

Baseball Career

Jackson was on his pathway to playing pro football after college. “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers” selected him in the 1986 NFL Draft with the first pick. After a visit to Buccaneer’s facilities, he refused the opportunity to perform for them. He was denied college sports after the Buccaneers claimed that he had been permitted for a visit by NCAA. Jackson believes the Buccaneers’ failure to support NCAA endorsement was an intentional move to try and get him to play pro football rather than baseball. He refused to sign with them and opted to play professional baseball for “Kansas City Royals”, who had recruited him in the 1986 amateur draft.

Jackson signed a US$ 1.07 million, three-year contract with the “Royals”. He also played 53 games for their Class AA minor league affiliate, the “Memphis Chicks”. In September 1986, he was called to the majors and made the Royals’ roster for 1987. The “Royals” released Jackson in 1991 because of his injury. In 1992, the “Chicago White Sox” offered him a US$ 8.15 million performance-based contract. It guaranteed US$ 700,000/season. Jackson was a “White Sox” player in 1991 and 1993. He took 1992 off to undergo hip replacement surgery and was placed on the disabled list. Jackson retired at 32 after his professional athletic career with the California Angels in 1994.

Football Career

Jackson was the 183rd  pick of the “Los Angeles Raiders” in the 1987 NFL Draft. He was picked in the 7th round. He initially remained focused on his baseball career and was disinterested. However, he began to take an interest in playing in the NFL when he discovered that Al Davis, the “Raiders” owner, was open to Jackson playing both sports simultaneously. Jackson negotiated a US$ 7.4 million, five-year contract to allow him to complete each MLB season before reporting to the “Raiders”. Even though it would mean he would miss NFL games, the US$ 7.4 million contract was worth it. Davis also offered Jackson the highest salary for a non-quarterback player in NFL History at that time and a US$ 500,000 signing bonus.

Jackson was a four-year NFL player. He ran for 2,782 yards with 16 touchdowns and an average of 5.4 yards per carry. Jackson also caught 40 passes, totaling 352 yards and 2 touchdowns. His last game of professional football was in January 1991. He suffered a dislocated right hip from a tackle. He would have to replace his left hip after it caused avascular necrosis. Jackson was released by the Royals and would continue to struggle until his retirement in 1994.

Jackson started a “Bo Bikes Bama” fundraiser to help his home state of Alabama. After a series of tornadoes decimated Alabama in April 2011, the event was initiated. Many residents of Alabama were left without power and lost their lives in the tornadoes that decimated hundreds of people. During Jackson’s five-day bike tour, Jackson visited several towns that the tornadoes had destroyed. Scottie Pippen and Lance Armstrong were among the celebrities who accompanied Bo on this tour. Today, “Bo Bikes Bama,” a campaign to raise over US$ 1.1 million for Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund, has attracted more than 1.2 million.
