Anthony Rizzo was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 8, 1989. He was the youngest of three children in his family. His father, John, was a fire-fighter and his mother, Laurie, was an elementary school teacher. Rizzo grew up playing baseball from a young age, joining local Little League teams as a child. He attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he excelled at both baseball and football. He was named team MVP for both baseball and football during his senior year. After high school, Rizzo attended Florida Atlantic University, where he continued to play baseball. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He spent four years in the Red Sox organization before being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2010.


He was traded to San Diego Padres for Adrian Gonzalez, a three-time All-Star first baseman. Rizzo also traded Eric Patterson, Reymond Fuentes, and Casey Kelly. His debut in the Major League was delayed by the announcement made in May 2011. He played 52 games for the ‘Tucson Padres’ before being called to the majors.
